Advantages of Diesel Engines

Diesel engines work a little differently than gas engines, using heat from compression to ignite fuel rather than using sparks to ignite fuel as is typically the process used by gas-powered engines. Many believe that diesel engines offer a wealth of benefits, including some mechanical engineers.

What are the benefits of owning a diesel engine? Here are some of the more commonly cited benefits of owning a diesel engine.

· Diesel powered engines are efficient. A diesel engine can convert from 45 to 50 percent of their fuel energy into horsepower. Typically a gasoline engine may convert up to 30 percent of its fuel energy.

· Diesel engines are very reliable. A diesel engine does not require a high voltage fuel ignition system, and therefore does not rely on spark plugs to ignite.

· Diesel tends to last longer. Many engineers believe that diesel engines have stronger than average lubricating properties and strongly designed engine parts which can result in less wear and tear on an automobile.

· Diesel produces less environmental toxins. Diesel gas may emit less gasoline engine exhaust fumes, which can be safer for the environment.

· Diesel fuel doesn’t produce as much carbon monoxide. This can be beneficial in environments where you may need to fuel indoors.

· Diesel engines can use alternative fuels. Many diesel engines can accept biofuels, but most gasoline engines have to be modified in order to accept biofuels or other alternative fuels.

· Better fuel mileage. Diesel engines typically get better fuel mileage or economy than gas vehicles because they generate more power at a higher compression rate.

· Lower automobile taxes. Typically diesel engines offer a lower tax rate than gasoline vehicles, often because they have lower emissions.

· Lower maintenance fees. Many times diesels have less maintenance and hence a longer lifespan, typically because less repair is required of an ignition system that does not require electronic repair.
